1999 Lech Walesa, Former President
of Poland and Winner of Nobel Peace Prize
announces and congratulates Prof. MUHAMMAD YUNUS
as the Winner of the 2007 ABICC AWARD FOR
LEADERSHIP IN GLOBAL TRADE for his leadership in accelerating economic and social development in Bangladesh and in other countries around the world by creating a revolutionary model of banking practice that allows millions of poor to have an opportunity to develop their dreams and skills, and thereby lift themselves out of poverty. Ms. Lita Haeger, the President of ABiCC, said that Dr. Yunus model can be repeated with great success throughout the poor regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. His leadership in the development of the Grameen Bank has become a beacon of hope for millions throughout the western hemisphere. Muhammad Yunus is a Bangladeshi banker and economist. He is the developer of the concept of micro-credit, the extension of small loans to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Dr. Yunus is also the founder of Grameen Bank. Dr. Yunus and the bank were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006, "for their efforts to create economic and social development from below." Trained in economics in the United States, he returned to Bangladesh in 1972 and took a chair in economics at the University of Chittagong. In 1974 he underwent a personal crisis during the country's famine. It shook him to see such poverty. As early as in 1976, he hit on the idea of opening a bank for poor people. He lent 27 dollars out of his own pocket to 42 craftsmen in a little village in Bangladesh, telling them that they could pay the money back when they could afford to. In the weeks that followed, he gave the matter a great deal of thought, and decided that there would have to be an institutional solution. The result was Grameen Bank, which is present today in the vast majority of Bangladesh's thousands of villages, and which since its formal opening in 1983 has lent almost six billion dollars. Today the bank has almost seven million borrowers. Grameen Bank lends 800 million dollars per year, in loans averaging just over one hundred dollars. The bank is self-financing and makes a profit. The repayment percentage is very high. Muhammad Yunus says, "Lend the poor money in amounts which suit them, teach them a few sound financial principles, and they manage on their own". Muhammad Yunus has shown himself to be a leader who has managed to turn visions into practical action for the benefit of millions of people, not only in Bangladesh but also in many other countries. There are now micro-credit programs in nearly one hundred countries all over the world. Loans to poor people, most often women, without any financial security had appeared to be an impossible idea. From modest beginnings three decades ago, Yunus has, first and foremost through Grameen Bank, developed micro-credit into an ever more important instrument in the struggle against poverty. Grameen Bank has been a source of ideas and models for the many institutions in the field of micro-credit that have sprung up around the world. In Yunus's words, "Micro-credit is a well-tried and well-founded method that can bring financial services to the poorest of the poor. Micro-credit promotes entrepreneurship, and puts each individual poor person, especially women, in the driving-seat in their own lives". The Association of bi-National Chambers of Commerce (ABiCC), the umbrella organization for over forty international chambers of commerce in Florida, will host a Gala Dinner on Thursday, March 15, at 7PM, in honor of Dr. Muhammad Yunus to present him with the Award for Leadership in Global Trade. Sponsor by Hong Kong Trade Development Council ( TDC) The ABiCC business mission to Hong Kong came back to Miami after a very successful trip. The delegation of 26 participants from the various bi-national chambers that are members of ABiCC had the opportunity to assist at Hong Kong's most important annual exhibition for small and medium-sized companies( World SME EXPO) . The event had over 30,000 visitors. The French prime minister and the Swedish princess Birgitta were present at the opening ceremony, together with representatives of all the participating countries. ABiCC's delegation represented the USA. The delegates had the opportunity to participate in seminars, receptions and match-makings with potential business partners, distributors, manufacturers, and representatives. The President of ABiCC, Lita Haeger, mentioned that the mission was extremely successful and that the desired objectives had been surpassed. She said that the mission gave a global platform to the participants, creating new business opportunities and building commercial and business links with the most vibrant city in Asia that is definitely the gateway to the world's largest market, China, where opportunities are infinite. Hong Kong has a free trade agreement with China, which facilitates business with this huge country. The mission was sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and ABiCC. For those wishing to participate in ABiCC's next business mission to Hong Kong, please contact ABiCC at news@abicc.org or call 305-365-7247.
ABiCC adds new Costa Rican chamber to its organization. The Association of Bi-National Chambers of Commerce in Florida (ABiCC) recently had its annual General Assembly at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables During the meeting, ABiCC approved the membership of the newly created Costa Rica-US Chamber of Commerce. The President of the Costa Rican chamber, Mr. Gerardo Borbon, made a presentation to the board of directors of ABiCC, informing on the business opportunities offered by his country. The Costa Rican chamber was created in May, and has already 43 business members in less than one month, which is an indication of the need for this new organization. The President of ABiCC, Mrs. Lita Haeger, said: "The creation of the Costa Rica-US Chamber of Commerce opens new business opportunities with this country, a fact that is especially important at this moment, since the approval of a free trade agreement with Central America is a very important issue for the whole region. We therefore have the opportunity to play an important role in promoting business and investment opportunities with Costa Rica. The existence of a Costa Rican chamber in Florida will facilitate the access to information on these opportunities offered by this beautiful country that is only a few hours' flight from Miami. ABiCC, together with its diverse representation of international business communities in Florida, is strongly supportive of the approval of the DR-CAFTA, the free trade agreement between the Central American countries, the Dominican Republic and the USA. Stability in the region will only be possible with economic prosperity through free trade." The Mayor of Coral Gables, Mr. Don Slesnick, was a special guest during the event, and gave a presentation on the current business trends in Coral Gables, as well as on the advantages offered by the City to international corporations and diplomatic corps when establishing offices there. Mr. Slesnick congratulated ABiCC on its efforts in promoting international trade in Florida and thanked the organization for using Coral Gables as the location for its meetings. ABiCC is the umbrella organization for 44 bi-national chambers of commerce, which together have approximately 8000 international business members representing countries from all continents. For further information, please contact ABiCC at news@abicc.org or 305-365-7247.
