The Awardees:
Joe Lacher is the embodiment of a good
corporate citizen and will receive the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate
Citizenship. Under his leadership, BellSouth touches lives through donations to
health programs, children, the university, the arts, inner-city economic development and
other important charities. His involvement in many statewide organizations assists in
promoting education, job opportunities and quality of life issues that attract large
corporations to Florida.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas will be presented the Woodrow
Wilson Award for Public Service. He has been a leader in the South Florida
political landscape for the past twelve years. He guides the largest metropolitan
government in the southeastern United States and exercises authority over a $4.1 billion
budget. His accomplishments include lowering crime, the childrens initiative,
economic development, designating Miami-Dade a Federal Empowerment Zone, and programs to
help Miamis homeless community.
The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars
was established by Congress in 1968 as a part of the Smithsonian Institution to
bring together the worlds top thinkers and scholars with government policymakers and
private sector executives to discuss vital current issues in a nonpartisan setting. The
Woodrow Wilson Center provides policymakers, business and opinion leaders - upon whose
informed judgement the American public depends - access to the most up-to-date information
on all sides of principal issues.
