The Awardees:

Joe Lacher is the embodiment of a good corporate citizen and will receive the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship. Under his leadership, BellSouth touches lives through donations to health programs, children, the university, the arts, inner-city economic development and other important charities. His involvement in many statewide organizations assists in promoting education, job opportunities and quality of life issues that attract large corporations to Florida.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas will be presented the Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service. He has been a leader in the South Florida political landscape for the past twelve years. He guides the largest metropolitan government in the southeastern United States and exercises authority over a $4.1 billion budget. His accomplishments include lowering crime, the children’s initiative, economic development, designating Miami-Dade a Federal Empowerment Zone, and programs to help Miami’s homeless community.

The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars   was established by Congress in 1968 as a part of the Smithsonian Institution to bring together the world’s top thinkers and scholars with government policymakers and private sector executives to discuss vital current issues in a nonpartisan setting. The Woodrow Wilson Center provides policymakers, business and opinion leaders - upon whose informed judgement the American public depends - access to the most up-to-date information on all sides of principal issues.
